Understanding Value
March 9-30, 2023

ValueScale.jpeg

There's a saying in painting- value does the work but color gets the glory.  Which is a clever way of saying that value is one of the most important elements of representational painting.

In this four-week workshop we'll dive into all things value. Participants will learn techniques for seeing values more accurately, do exercises designed to gain a better understanding of value and how it relates to color, and gain more knowledge about what this all means for the pastel painting practice. Some reference photos will be provided by the instructor, but participants should also have a landscape photo of their own to use. A digital camera e.g. phone (in addition to whatever device is being used for zoom) is also needed.

This workshop includes demonstrations, lots of feedback during class, and a detailed critique of your paintings by email. The demonstration portion of classes are recorded and available for the week between each class. The last class is available for one week after workshop ends. Participants who cannot make the live zoom sessions are welcome to take this workshop as recording-only.

Time Requirements Outside Of Class:

Painting outside of class is not a requirement from week to week, but to get the most out of this workshop you may want to set aside a little time to review the recordings and practice painting. The recorded demonstrations are available for one week; if students would like to paint along with the recorded demos (to either finish paintings, or to create new ones) watching the recordings before they expire should be factored into the time commitment. Student's will be asked to email pictures of their work for review within one week of the workshop ending. This is optional, and paintings do not have to be finished to receive feedback. Please plan on sending images within one week's time if you would like to receive feedback.

"Meg is an excellent teacher. I like the way workshops are done, including the email feedback given afterwards, it's very helpful. I look forward to taking online classes again in the future."

"I enjoyed the workshop very much and hope to take more online workshops with Meg. I learned a lot and the feedback is wonderful!"

-Diana

"Taking a class from Meg is sitting at the feet of a master, one who shares all her secrets and techniques without covering over your own personal style. There's a wide gap between doing and teaching, Meg closes that with patience, enthusiasm, and specific, very helpful critiques. I'd recommend her well-planned and creative lessons to anyone wanting to learn and improve their artistic abilities."

-Suzanne

"I took my first pastel class with Meg and totally enjoyed myself. The new techniques were fun and Meg was both encouraging and also offered gentle criticisms, which are so necessary in order to grow. I have decided to continue with pastel and hope to take more workshops with Meg soon. Thank You Meg!"
